New page

The Digital Education Revolution was a $2.3 billion (AUD) program established by the Australian government to contribute sustainable change in teaching and learning for Australian schools to prepare students to live and work in a digital world. The National Secondary School Computer Fund, a part of the DER, was created to assist schools in providing upgraded or new ICT for all secondary students (grades 9-12). The goal was to achieve a 1:1 ratio of students to computers by December 31, 2011.

In addition, the plan provided funds to support the development of fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) broadband connections to all Australian schools, funds to develop online curriculum resources, as well as an agreement to collaborate with states and territories to provide teachers with access to training in ICT and in how to use ICT in the development of rich learning environments for students. Other goals include providing opportunities for parents to participate in their child's education through online access to information, as well as providing support mechanisms to assist schools in deploying ICT.

The National Secondary School Computer Fund began in early 2008 and by May 2009 three rounds of funding had occurred. The goal of the first three rounds of funding was to bring the student to computer ration in secondary schools to 2:1. Since the Digital Education Revolution Funding Agreements were endorsed and signed by the Catholic and Independent education authorities, funding is now to be provided biannually to reach a 1:1 student to computer ratio.
SusanEinhorn
