CEIBAL stands for Educational Connectivity Project of Basic Information Technology (Conectividad Educativa de Informatica Basica para el Aprendizaje en Linea). The project, begun in 2007 as a pilot project in Villa Cardal, had, by 2010 reached all primary students, approximately 400,000, and 18,000 teachers. In 2010, the project is rolling out 100,000 laptops for high school students.

Ninety-eight per cent of the schools have internet connectivity, another key component of Plan CEIBAL.

The project is viewed as part of a plan for inclusion and equitable access for all to the knowledge society, project leaders declaring that it is every child's right to have access to technology anytime and anywhere. According the the presidential decree issued in 2007 establishing the project, The “[Plan Ceibal's] longer-term objective is to promote social justice by promoting equal access to information and communication tools for all our people.”

LATU, the Technology Laboratory of Uruguay (Laboratorio Tecnológico del Uruguay), led by Miguel Brechner Frey, is responsible for the overall implementation. A newly formed entity within LATU, CITS (Centro para la Inclusion Tecnologica y Social - Center for Technological and Social Inclusion) now coordinates all activities.
Thu, 18 Nov 2010 22:18:50 GMT SusanEinhorn http://beta.aalf.org/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:CEIBAL
