Methodist Ladies College's motto was “For God and Home”. While a private school, MLC accepted daughters whose fathers were “in the trade”, such as builders and shopkeepers. For the first 97 years since its inception, MLC had just four principals, all of whom were Methodist ministers. </ins></div></td></tr>

<tr><td colspan="2"> </td><td class='diff-marker'>+</td><td style="background: #cfc; color:black; font-size: smaller;"><div><ins style="color: red; font-weight: bold; text-decoration: none;">In November 1988, three teachers at MLC put forth a proposal that they would volunteer to run a Sunrise class at MLC, which would be a pilot program involving one seventh grade class. The proposal stated that the pilot’s emphasis would be “on the creation of an environment in which an integrated approach to learning would be encouraged. Student would be free to explore ideas, to make connections to make connections and to use technology in an active process in accordance with the concepts developed by Seymour Papert and his associates at the MIT Media Laboratory.” The teachers aimed to support student-driven, independent learning. At this stage students did not have computers within their classrooms. They had access to a computer room, which was free to use at anytime. The first teachers within the program had to learn LogoWriter very quickly over the Christmas vacation. This meant that the teachers’ knowledge and experience was only slightly ahead of the students’ knowledge and experience. Many students’ grasp of Logo soon outran that of the teachers, and this helped to foster an environment centered on partnered learning. LogoWriter enabled students to write programs that combined narrative and graphics. </ins></div></td></tr>

The school had to figure out a way to continue the success with all of their 2,000 students. Then Principal, David Loader advocated the influx of more computers in the school, despite the tight budget and classroom space issues. After attending a personal computer show at Melbourne’s Exhibition building, David Loader managed to rally a group of supportive staff to back his interest in starting a one-student-one computer program at MLC.</ins></div></td></tr>
