OLPC founding and several large scale implementations

New page

The One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization is a non-profit organization whose mission is to create educational opportunities for the world's poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning. Founded in 2004 by Nicholas Negroponte, OLPC reflects many of the ideas espoused by Negroponte's associate, Dr. Seymour Papert. Although well-known for the development of the little green computer known as the XO, OLPC states that their mission is an educational one, not a technological one. Although the original promise was that the XO would be the "$100 computer" based on projected countrywide sales of a million+ machines, when first released in 2007 the actual cost was $188 (US). The organization states it is working to bring the cost down to $100 (US) or less.

Over 100,000 XO computers have been distributed to school children in Uruguay. Other areas that have seen large-scale implementations include Peru, Birmingham, Alabama, and Rwanda. In June, 2009, the OLPC in partnership with the government of Rwanda launched a Global Center for Excellence in Laptops and Learning in Kigali. Rwanda has committed to supplying all of its 2.2 million primary school children with personal laptops by 2012.
Wed, 24 Jun 2009 21:46:45 GMTSusaneinhornhttp://beta.aalf.org/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:One_Laptop_Per_Child
