All of a sudden, however, they are no longer kids and they're leaving the house. A lot of parents have a difficult time coping with this change. You are certainly not alone in feeling lost and aimless. As in all other major life-altering changes, there are ideas that can help you cope with the empty nest syndrome.

The first thing that you will need to realize is that the departure of your children does not in any way stop you from being their parent. Essentially, the relationship is mainly changing because your children are not as reliant on you as they used to be, something toward which a good parent progresses naturally from the earliest years. When kids are growing up, part of the process is to become more independent with each passing year. This is the time when you can embrace this new phase and help them through it by not trying to hold on to them.

It doesn't matter how far away your kids are, they are always going to need you in some capacity. Likewise, they will always be your children. If you give them the support they need, they can grow into becoming your friends as well.

Your child moving out of the house can present you with a new opportunity to get reacquainted with your spouse. It?s hard to get time alone with children in the house. You'll have more time now to focus on each other and to get reacquainted. You have an opportunity to do all of the things that you wanted to do before, but couldn?t. It's a wonderful time to get out there and have some fun with your spouse. You can get spontaneously romantic whenever you wish. You may just find that your child leaving the home helps to bring the spontaneity and romance back into your relationship. You can enjoy similar benefits if you're a single parent. You can use your newfound free time as the perfect excuse for going out and meeting new people. In the process you could find yourself falling in love and starting a whole new life.

Begin filling up your life with other activities, such as investing time in a new hobby. You can join a recreational league to get back in shape. You can finish up that masters degree that you always wanted to get. Nothing is out of reach for you anymore.

Don't launch yourself into a totally new world of irrevocable changes. Take time to get used to the way it is now before you make any huge changes. Of course, you are free to contact your children. They'll probably be having a hard time adjusting to their new lives, too. Once you and your children have gone through the adjustment period, you can start tackling new adventures and challenges. Take the time to enjoy your new life. You prepared your child for life. Job well done! Now it?s time for you to have a different kind of fun.
Mon, 16 Apr 2012 14:09:11 GMT StillMadison825 http://beta.aalf.org/wiki/index.php?title=Talk:StillMadison825
