New page

Can Water Retention Be Treated With Diet?

[http://www.water-retention.net Water Retention] can have many different causes, but the only causes considered medically significant are heart, kidney or liver disease. Most other cases of water retention are classified as 'idiopathic edema'. Despite this, they are often treated with diuretic drugs.

Diuretics stimulate the kidneys to remove water from the bloodstream. Some tissue fluid will be drawn into the blood as it becomes dehydrated. The patient's edema may appear to be reduced, but as soon as more fluid enters the bloodstream as a result of drinking, fluid will return to the tissues, since the faulty capillary integrity, histamine excess, osmolarity imbalance or serum albumin deficiency which was keeping it there, has not been resolved.

Many patients observe that by drinking very little fluid, their edema will appear to remain reduced as long as they keep taking diuretics. Unfortunately this can lead to chronic dehydration, and a dependency on diuretics is also common.

Following a diet such as the Waterfall Diet can be a more appropriate treatment for idiopathic edema, as it aims to correct many of the potential causes. Physicians should consider referring these patients for dietary therapy before prescribing diuretics.
